What is the legal drinking limit in Chicago?
If you’re a resident of Illinois, you’ll typically need to keep your blood alcohol content, or BAC, below a certain percent in order to legally drive. In Illinois, this percent for most residents is 0.08 percent. However, if you’re a commercial driver, you may be held to a different standard. You could be arrested for driving under the influence at 0.04 percent as a truck driver.
If you’re a minor, the laws are even stricter. Illinois is what’s known as a zero-tolerance state. That means if you’re a minor, your BAC must be 0.0 percent if you’re pulled over, or you could be arrested.
What is a BAIID?
A BAIID, known as a breath alcohol ignition interlock device, is a tool placed on your car (if you are eligible) to help you avoid a license suspension. Rather than your license being suspended for a year, you’ll have this installed for a year. This device makes it impossible to start your car’s engine until you’ve passed a breath alcohol test.
This can be an inconvenient option, but it may be the only way to keep your license if you’re license is suspended because of a DUI.
Will a drunk driving conviction affect my insurance?
Sadly, a DUI conviction can affect you financially in more ways than just your court fees and criminal fines. Your insurance company will be notified about the DUI, and that can affect your premiums and your policy.
Insurance companies want to see that their drivers are safe and reliable in order to be covered. If you receive a DUI conviction, they may see that as a risk for their business. That means they may raise the costs of your coverage or may even refuse to cover you.
